“The Road To Wigan Pier: A (Socialist) Tea-Time Travelogue and Historical Musical Revue” is an original play (premiering in Austin, January 2004) based on George Orwell’s book, "The Road to Wigan Pier." It concerns the lives and struggles of a group of Lancashire coal miners in the mid-1930s. Set in a run-down working men’s club in Wigan, the play uses comedy, live music (original songs), film, agit-prop, and other dramatic storytelling devices to take the audience on a brief history of the eradication of Britain's coal mining industry -- along with the miners’ way of life -- from early mining days through the Margaret Thatcher years and on to today.
In addition to the play, we are creating this website (www.latejoys.com) that not only offers a taste of the upcoming production, but also provides a bit of educational background on many of the subjects covered in the play, with links to still more sites that will help intrepid web surfers to get acquainted with the Anglophiliac material contained in the play.
It is hoped that the production provides some fun and entertainment while telling an ultimately somber tale; and we hope that in stepping into this world -- so exquisitely described by Orwell and reasonably well presented by Austin’s finest theatre artists -- audiences will come realize the irretrievable loss that was suffered by all the inhabitants of Britain’s myriad mining communities as the last coal mines closed, and better cherish their own local community.
This list is our primary tool for communicating with our audience, to keep them informed as to various landmarks of the play's development.
