environmental performance puts the United States at the bottom of the
Group of 8 industrialized nations and 39th among the 149 countries on
the list.

Preserving Today, Trees for Tomorrow Building Award
(St. Paul, MN)- Tree Trust offers an education and outreach program
with the Builders Association of Minnesota that provides technical
assistance, workshops, and continuing education credits for best
management practices in preserving, protecting, and replanting trees
during land development and construction.

RESEARCH
Bare Root Method
Ithaca, NY (2003)- It's the roots that suffer when trees are
transplanted. Not only do roots grow horizontally beyond the
dripline, but there is often a higher percentage of them beyond the
dripline than within it. An unbelievable 90% of tree roots are
routinely left behind in the nursery at the time of harvest. Bare
root method planting could be the answer to this problem.

PUBLIC POLICY
Administration Budget for FY09
Washington, DC (February 4, 2008)- The President's budget was
released today. All State and Private Forestry programs experienced
big cuts, with Urban and Community Forestry scheduled for an 82%
reduction resulting in a $5 million budget.

USDA Conservation Innovation Grant- Deadline: Feb. 20
The USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is offering
grants to stimulate the development and adoption of innovative
conservation approaches and technologies while leveraging the Federal
investment in environmental enhancement and protection in conjunction
with agricultural production.
