Paving the Way for Greener Roads
Durham, NH (February 24, 2008)- Last June, the University of New
Hampshire established the Recycled Materials Resource Management
Center with the goal of creating a green roads program that develops
criteria for what makes a roadway green. Kevin Gardner, UNH associate
professor of civil engineering and director of the Environmental
Research Group, said, "We have a real opportunity to re-build the
infrastructure the right way with sustainable materials and socially
sensitive designs that protect air, water, land, and human resources."

Iowa's Living Roadways: Community Visioning Program
(Marion, IA)- Trees Forever helps small communities in Iowa envision
and design community-wide landscape improvements that enhance
transportation corridors. Iowa State University's Landscape
Architecture Extension coordinates professional design services and
the Iowa Department of Transportation funds the program using Federal
Highway Administration monies.

RESEARCH
Benefits and Risks of Urban Roadside Landscape
Seattle, WA (June 25, 2007)- Placement of trees and landscape features
within the urban right-of-way is often perceived by transportation
officials as a safety risk. Conversely, there are many community
benefits that may result from having roadside landscape, and advocates
of urban forestry encourage roadside plantings. Within urban
environments transportation mobility and accessibility needs should be
balanced with urbanites' health and welfare.

PUBLIC POLICY
State Foresters React to 60% Cut in Federal Funding
Washington, DC (February 7, 2008)- State foresters across the country
reacted angrily this week to deep cutbacks in federal funding for
state and private forestry programs within the U.S. Forest Service.
The president's FY09 budget proposal cuts nearly 60 percent from
current levels, with funding for some priority programs slashed as
much as 80 percent.
