ABOUT US
Alliance for Community
Trees is dedicated to improving the environment where 80% of Americans
live: our cities, towns, and villages. Together, ACT's national
network of members have planted and cared for 14.9 million trees with
help from 4.3 million volunteers.

ABOUT WEBCASTS
The Third Thursday Webcast Series is a monthly webcast held at the
lunch hour. The goal is to create informal trainings for local urban
and community forestry organizations. The trainings leverage local
successes by amplifying to a larger audience the model organizations'
methods, materials, and approaches.

SmartGrowth and Urban Forestry- Part II: City Planning
March 19, 2009
1:00- 2:00pm EST

Smart Growth intersects with urban forestry on many levels: energy
costs, crime, livability/sustainability, and more. Urban design is no
longer isolated solely to buildings. Trees are part of the natural
infrastructure, and their beneficial effects on urban landscapes are
becoming better known. Understanding SmartGrowth trends can help you
position your projects and programs to better integrate with building
and land use trends. "Green infrastructure" is a term that is
appearing more and more frequently in land conservation and
development discussions.

Strategies to Manage Underused Property
Dan Kildee, Treasurer, Genesee County, MI
Facing shrinking populations and declining investments in center
cities, Genesee County aggressively targeted empty lots and vacant
properties with innovative strategies to reclaim underused property,
redevelop it with public capital, and sell it- improved and at a
profit- to property managers and homeowners. Some of the strategies
included green infrastructure and urban greening, land banking, land
trusts, and collaborative community planning processes.

Communicating with Planners and Engineers
Dan Staley, City Planner, Castle Rock, CO
Tree people don't typically speak planning-ese and engineering-ese, so
in the Town of Castle Rock, the planners and engineers are approaching
the tree people and working with them on how to talk to planners and
engineers about strategies to overcome the challenges of denser
development.
