Funding sources explored include a trust fund to accept private donations, sales and property taxes, carbon sequestration credits, income tax donations, and utility partnerships. It has been assumed that clear, sunny skies are ideal for the greatest plant growth, but the presence of clouds and pollution scatter the light in the process of diffuse radiation. This results in fewer leaves left in total shade and an increase in photosynthesis. Read the full story LOCAL STORY Underground Soil Cells First in PA (Pittsburgh, PA)- The street trees outside of the new August Wilson Center for African American Culture are among the first to benefit from underground soil cell technology call Silva Cells. It is comprised of open stacks of plastic "cells" that are sturdy enough to support a sidewalk above while housing non-compacted soil in the voids below. The cells also have the added benefit of providing additional storm water storage on site, which decreases the load on the City's storm system. Read the full story LOCAL STORY State seeks workers for GreenCorps (St. Paul, MN)- The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has launched GreenCorps, an ambitious program to recruit workers for a variety of environmental initiatives across the state. The program is an off- shoot of AmeriCorps, the nation's largest paid community service program. The urban forestry program will begin work on a statewide tree inventory to help assist officials with addressing the outbreak of emerald ash borer, a foreign beetle responsible for the decimation of many ash trees throughout Minnesota.
