ABOUT US
Alliance for Community
Trees is dedicated to improving the environment where 80% of Americans
live: our cities, towns, and villages. Together, ACT's national
network of members have planted and cared for 14.9 million trees with
help from 4.3 million volunteers.
ABOUT WEBCASTS
The Third Thursday Webcast Series is a monthly webcast held at the
lunch hour. The goal is to create informal trainings for local urban
and community forestry organizations. The trainings leverage local
successes by amplifying to a larger audience the model organizations'
methods, materials, and approaches.

Urban Landscaping- Part II: Tree Stock
July 16, 2009
1:00- 2:00pm EST
Millions of dollars are spent each year designing, implementing, and
maintaining urban landscapes. Urban landscaping presents a variety of
challenges, including physiological problems; working with
municipalities; developing technologies for city use; and utilizing
methods beyond field work to promote environmental care. Yet the
quality of life benefits of proper urban landscaping are dramatic. By
using sustainable landscape practices, cities and towns can avoid or
reduce serious problems, in part by transforming their urban forests
into major rainwater mitigation assets. Tree stock selection can play
an important role in the long-term success of urban landscaping.

RESEARCH PERSPECTIVE
Jim Urban, JimUrban Associates (Annapolis, MD)
Jim Urban's work is constantly evolving the field of urban
landscaping. A recent advancement that he is now pioneering is the
Silva Cell, a modular, pre-engineered cell system designed
specifically to meet the needs of water management soil and tree
roots. The system is designed to create large spaces under the
pavement, and the pavement is supported and protected from root damage
by the cell structure.

ON THE GROUND
Sue Probart, Tree New Mexico (Albuquerque)
Tree New Mexico operates one of the most successful tree stewardship
operations in the country. Annually, they're responsible for the
planting and care of 3,000 to 5,000 trees in collaboration with
communities, neighborhood associations, public housing, highways, and
public green spaces. Selecting tree stock is a major decision that
affects successful plantings. Learn why Tree New Mexico uses
containerized trees.
