McPhail, an associate at The Home Depot in West Asheville, showed Nick Jones, 10, Irun Whiteside Francisco, 8, and Alex White, 9, how deep to dig, how to mix the soil with rich mulch and how to set the oak sapling into the hole. City and County staff have revised the draft 2009 Climate Action Plan to address key findings from the public comment process. The adoption of this plan means that we set in place our community's ambitious sustainability roadmap to cut our local carbon emissions by 80 percent by the year 2050, Mayor Sam Adams said. These processes are widely accepted in the scientific community, yet they have not really been translated into the language that most often drives planning and land use decisions at the local level: dollars. So the Center for Watershed Protection is in the process of reviewing existing literature on the costs and benefits of forests for protecting drinking water quality, and conducting a pilot study. Read the full story LOCAL STORY S.C. inmates grow trees for nonprofits (Florence, SC)- The South Carolina Department of Corrections has handed out nearly 3,000 trees to public entities and nonprofit groups across the state. The trees were grown and cared for by inmates at the Kershaw and Turbeville Correctional Institutions.
