Literarily a "loose cannon" on a military ship is very dangerous. In =
the heat of battle it can fire when the crew least expects it and in bad =
weather a heavy cannon can roll over crew members and kill them. Very =
dangerous indeed. Therefore to refer to someone as a loose cannon means =
that they are very dangerous to those around them.
