RICK JAMES, the creator of the hit "Super Freak," has died, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed to ET. The 56-year-old funk legend apparently passed away of natural causes. Police were called to a residence at 9:45 a.m. Friday. A source tells ET that James was discovered deceased in his bed. After his heyday in the early '80s, James fell into cocaine addiction. He served two years in prison for two incidents involving assaulting women while high. Following his release, he suffered a stroke and also experienced heart trouble. In June, James was honored with a special ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Award in Beverly Hills.
