I'd switched off by then!
The PJ Harvey Mixing it interview is repeated on
Friday Radio 3, usually about 10.30pm unless the
operas run on. It was quite an interesting interview,
which surprised me as Mixing It usually don't dig up
much beyond the obvious with their interviews. They
also seem to have a similar perspective on Polly's
best albums (Louse Point, Is This Desire?, Uh Huh Her)
as me, and in this interview Polly concurs. Its a
SHAME there haven't been as many live recordings
broadcast on radio with the Ding/Josh/Ellis band as
during Stories time.
On Keep It Peel, Radio One
Polly & Josh played three songs:
Horses In My Dreams
Fountain
You Come Through
It was a surprise to hear Horses, and I much prefer
this to the Stories version. Actually I probably
prefer the live versions of almost every song from
that album, as broadcast extensively by John Peel. I
actually didn't recognise Horses at first and thought
they were going to play Knocking On Heaven's Door! You
Come Through was also quite a different version,
percussion losing ground to acoustic guitar.
Polly also chose Dropout Boogie by Captain Beefheart
as the record to be played before she sang, maybe
because Sheila the Pig was a mother.
Its a shame Polly couldn't have played more, as most
of the other musicians ranged from atrocious emeticism
to fey mediocrity. How can anyone listen to Graham
Coxon without feeling nauseous?
Nina Nastasia was the only other artist worthy of
following Polly Harvey's tribute, and when she said,
"This one's for John," it was very touching. She'd
flown all the way from the USA to play just two songs!
It would've been nice if various Britpap bores had
stayed home so she could've had time to play a few
more.
Trencher were also quite entertaining. How lovely to
hear a tiny Napalm Death cover!
