strongly recommend New Orleans and the drive to Memphis via Clarkesdale where you should spend at least 1 night at the Shack Up Inn (www.shackupinn.com) and Mississippi has some of the nicest people outside of the gathering 
found Memphis lacking, unless you're looking for sites to tick, in which case don't miss Graceland.

  funnily enough i may be there myself. landing in san Francisco on 21st July, then driving down 101 to san Diego. after that planning a quick detour to Vegas, then maybe Memphis or New Orleans, then flying back from New York on 10th August

  I know there's people out there who live in these places. Any tips on accommodation or where to go? am going out there with a mate so it certainly will not be a family-orientated holiday
