There must be an ancient link between Tom and Fool.
"Poor Tom's a cold!" is a line spoken by a character in Shakespeare's 'King
Lear', and it signifies his transformation. I seem to remember the
character's original identity as Edgar. He joins Lear in his humbling in the
wilderness as they learn for themselves the wisdom of the fool. This follows
the departure from the action of the Fool himself (the actual character,
Lear's jester), who has been telling Lear uncomfortable truths all along.
Telling uncomfortable truths seems fairly central to the Killing Joke raison
d'être.
Yours rather eruditely
Si
