The most strings I've seen with my own eyes on a bass is 7, if it's one 
string per note.  12-string bass is 3 strings times 4, the way a 
12-string guitar is 2 strings times 6.

John Paul Jones plays 12-string bass on a recent instrumental CD a 
friend played for me.  It's good stuff except to me vocals seemed missing.
