Probe into 'murder music'
By Andre Paine, Evening Standard
2 November 2004
Police have launched an investigation into anti-gay reggae lyrics
after the homophobic killing of a man in London.
The inquiry involves the so-called "murder music" of popular reggae
acts including Buju Banton, Elephant Man and Beenie Man.
One of the most controversial artists being investigated is the
Jamaican star Sizzla, real name Miguel Collins, who arrives in London
this week for a UK tour. His hits include one called Boom Boom, with
the lyric "Shoot queers". One of Elephant Man's songs has the line:
"Queers must be killed". Today Scotland Yard's Racial and Violent
Crime Task Force revealed it is investigating eight reggae acts.
Detective Chief Inspector Clive Driscoll said: "We have purchased the
CDs and are having these translated from patois to English. The
allegations are very serious."
News of the investigation comes after the killing of barman David
Morley, 37, beaten to death by a gang of teenagers - two boys and two
girls - who targeted people leaving the gay nightclub Heaven.
Gay rights campaigners warned of a link between the growing popularity
of the music and "gay bashing" incidents after police figures showed
homophobic incidents have soared by 10 per cent in a year.

wondering what the implications of this might lead to
