With a name like Felicity Partridge,I would have thought you would be a bit more knowledgeable than that. For a start , relatively speaking Tony Blair is poorly paid for the job he does, leaders of big corporations earn at least ten times his salary, as he is leading the whole country his renumeration should be the countries largest. To suggest that Tony Blair is doing the job just for the high!!! salary is also ludicrous, he could earn at least ten times what he is getting now if he quit as PM and toured the world making speeches, what he earns in a year now, he could earn in a week making speeches in the USA. Tony Blair has a very important job, he also has to make important decision's, it's not in anyones interest if TB has to worry about whether he can afford to purchase a new pair of shoes whilst contemplating these decisions--- On Thu 07/28, Partridge, Felicity < felicity.partridge at financial-ombudsman.org.uk > wrote:From: Partridge, Felicity [mailto:

Hmmmm not such a bright idea then. I would suggest paying them a low but reasonable salary but that is clearly not the answer. It's the old hackneyed problem whereby the kind of principled people who we might want to take decisions on our behalf are usually those who do not want to be public leaders, and so we are left with the second rate ones who are susceptible to bribes and corruption, etc. But if removing financial incentives doesn't work then I am as ever, stumped. (but not stunted).

Yes I'd go along with that insofar it would be an improvement. Ideally, leaders should be paid very little and not allowed any privileges to eliminate greedy types who will do the job for the money rather than for the benefit of the country.
Well, that is already in practice to some degree, as far as government salary. A small level of government is run that way...a lot of towns and cities pay the mayor VERY little. You know who becomes the mayor? The very wealthy, because no one could afford to live on that salary.
