[kj] On topic- sorry to intrude

Wait -- hang on a second -- do someone from the Smiths claim a Killing Joke influence? I mean, I know Rourke played with them for about sixteen seconds, but that always struck me as more of a botched job opportunity than a chance to play with one's heroes. Did Morrissey or Marr come out extolling the merits of the Joke? That I'd love to read.

Certainly yes. But what strikes me the most about such bands, particularly those involved by the aforementioned KJ, FNM and Smiths, is that the vast majority seem to have honed in on one small aspect of that influence and replicated it, rather than recognizing the more eclectic approach of these bands and their general tendency to expand beyond their existing template. Many of the highly influential bands were constantly evolving (for better or worse) but few of their admirers seem able to do the same. Churning out 'Wardance', 'Epic' or 'This Charming Man' over and over again suggests they're missing the point.
But perhaps that's what separates the great bands, the trailblazers, from the rest. You can't blame everyone for not being as good as the best.
Jim.

I think you can certainly be *INFLUENCED* by a band without sounding like them, though, no? Besides, if they *DID* sound like the `Joke -- or attempt to sound like the `Joke -- they'd be lambasted for *ripping off* the `Joke (ala Ministry, Big Black, etc.)
Chris Conrell's been talking about Killing Joke for quite some time (I remember him citing them in an interview circa LOUDER THAN LOVE in `89). I don't doubt his appreciation. Dunno about the Darkness guy.

That's the same with every influential band though, from Faith No More to the Smiths. When was the last time you heard a song from Papa Roach or Oasis that sounded like either of those two (in terms of music or quality, actually ;)?

bet timberlake and 50 cent are fans too

Justin Hawkins - or that twat out of the Darkness as I usually refer to him -says what a big fan of KJ he is and then ruins it by saying that if he had "a snowflakes chance in hell" of ever recognising Jaz he would punch him
then Chris Cornell - or that twat out of Audioslave as I... - no I dont really - picks Requiem as one of the trax that changed his life!
