Done that - there was silence at start and end of each track; I removed
it with Audacity.  Now Nero works a treat (with 0 second pause).

When you say horrid gaps, how long are you talking? I know that in
iTunes,
even if I select no gaps, there is still a very slight pause. Since
you've
converted your tracks to .wavs, do you have some kind of .wav editor
(I'm
not familiar with Nero)? If there is any extra space that is not
audible--which would be indicated by a straight line in the middle--I
would
move the end point inwards, or delete the deadspace. That would tighten
things up considerably.
