I agree that the Joke were a more creative and challenging outfit early on 
with JC (mostly) behind the keyboard. It LOOKED well different, and 
augmented that whole tribal vibe. I think his becoming more of an orthdox 
'frontman' was possibly the product of management/record label ideas about 
the Joke needing a central point of focus - this helps sell records. Also, 
his approach to keyboard work changed around the time of Firedances and 
thereafter became more of a reflection of his growing interest in the 
classical music world. Not saying this was a mistake; the guy obviously has 
what it takes. Its just that his whole approach changed. I still think that 
his playing in Nighttime, BATS and Extremeties is exceptional though 
(Kaliyuga still makes my nerve ends tingle), even if that original 'war 
painted man behind keyboard' will never be surpassed.
