At this point, yeah they are now an oldies act. Ian and Billy have both been
quoted as saying they have worked on some new material in 2006 but have no
idea or real drive to release it either as a new album or through some sort
of online means. The money is in touring so there's no real impetus to come
up with new music. Here in the US, The Cult recorded and released every show
on their North American through "InstantLive" as CD-R official bootlegs.

The problem with The Cult as well as a lot of successful older, established
bands is that they can't land a profitable new record deal these days plus
it's almost impossible to get decent radio airplay for any new material. In
the Cult's case, this was perfectly illustrated in the 2001 "Beyond Good and
Evil" album released through Atlantic. It was poorly promoted, the band
toured their ass off for almost a year and even though the album was
well-liked by fans and critics, it didn't get much airplay, didn't sell well
and the band barely broke even touring to make up the advance Atlantic gave
them to record and promote. Early in the process of recording the follow-up
to that album, Atlantic dropped their option with The Cult which is a key
reason why Ian left to do the (lame) Doors thing.
