[kj] Top 10, post-Y2K

I don't care that Interpol have Ian Curtis sound-alike vocals - they
write damn good songs. I couldn't care less if a band is a rip-off if
they have fantastic tunes of their own.

Cult of Luna is supposed to be an Isis rip-off. Cult of Luna are
outstanding. So what if a band make incredible songs in a style that's
been done before? I'm not going to deny myself some amazing music by
getting snobby over it.

Just my opinion.

Janean

PS: Killers on the other hand: first album good - second album awful.
Same with Franz Ferdinand.

YES INDEEDY!

The whole obviousness of the retro thing going on these days is a total
turn-off for me. "Ooh, why don't you

like Interpol?" Erm, maybe because they're such an obvious rip-off that
it makes me cringe. Ian Curtis

vocals anyone? Editors, Killers, blah blah, on & on & on.....

I love post-punk - the modern rip-off merchants aren't really
celebrating as much as trading on old glories

of pioneers. Pioneers that I never thought would get a listen, but I
guess a few Editors fans will manage

to find 'Unknown Pleasures' & find out what the real deal is. Also, many
of these retro c0cks just stick to

the poppy side of post-punk/alternative/indie, instead of making music
that MEANS something. Get those

sale figures up, boys!

You're so very right! One good example in my case is Motherwolf,
which is a pretty good band but not original at all: one song sounds
like Black Sabbath, the other like Led Zeppelin, another like Jethro
Tull... a lot of young people love them for sure, and i like them, but
as a "grown up" is just barely above any good 70's cover band.
And even when i like many of their songs, i just hate that
retro-music tendency. No talking when those bands are seem like
"authentique bands"... There are good examples of being retro but still
add some originality to the music, that's nice for me; but with bands
like Motherwolf -even when they're very good- is just like a waste of
time, they're entertaining, but they're not adding nothing new to the
musical panorama.

My two cents

>>I would be very interested in seeing those lists. I don't
think I've picked up on any bands that formed from 2000 on. I am into
rock which sadly seems to be dominated by emo and 80s inspired acts that
have, so far, left me cold. <<

That was largely my problem too ... well, that and having less
and less income for exploring new music! Online stuff has helped, but
getting the time is another challenge.

The main problem with reaching a "certain age" is that it's more
difficult to find something that sounds fresh, since the minute I hear
something that's supposed to be "new," I can almost immediately tell who
they were influenced by, so I think I might as well go ahead and listen
to the influencer rather than the influencee.

So seeing the recommendations here should be a big help. Cheers
all.
