The above almost exactly describes what happened with our son.  And when we 
had blood work done on him year after the vaccine, he had a very high level 
of mercury in his bloodstream.

In the past couple of years, it should be noted here in California those 
childhood vaccines with that specific mercury-based preservative are being 
phased out and the new autism diagnosis rate has begun to drop.  I 
personally believe autism is "triggered" by several concurrent medical 
issues that create a "perfect storm" resulting in a child's brain being 
damaged around the age of 2 years old.  If it was one thing, like genetics, 
or the vaccines or environmental or whatever, there would be vastly more 
autistic children with an easier to trace cause.

Still, I do think those vaccines play a huge part in many cases and it's key 
that the company that produces them has invested tremendous sums of money to 
prevent themselves from being hit with a class action lawsuit.  There's 
internal memos and research that's been uncovered that confirms the amount 
of mercury used to preserve these vaccines is hundreds if not thousands of 
time higher than any amount considered damaging *to an adult*, much less a 
child how is far more susceptible to mercury poisoning. And just in the past 
few years, the Bush administration passed a law basically protecting drug 
companies from such lawsuits.
