Greg, your gripe seems to with the whole Capitalist system rather than any one given action .Yes it is economically crucial to secure a supply of oil which keeps the country moving , every country needs oil otherwise it would grind to a halt . It's the Government's job to make sure that there is a steady supply of oil .
So what alternatives do you offer? , if there was a Communist Government in America , how would they secure a steady flow of oil? How would a communist Government have dealt with the oppressive regime of Saddam Hussein? A Communist Government would have probably supported the oppression .
The U.S. also doesnt control the sale, distribution and price of oil , this is done by OPEC and OPEC isnt influenced by the U.S.
You seem to think that a Communist government wouldn't need oil , a communist government will still need oil, but it wouldn't have the money to pay for it , a Communist government would be more likely to invade a Country with oil and take it without paying for it , due to its lack of monetary resources

Peter, the Iraq wars had to do with the US needing to control the sale, distribution , and pricing of oil. True, the war cost a huge amount (paid for by taxpayers), but it was worth it for the US capitalists, b/c their control of oil is crucial both economically, militarily, and stategically. BTW, the price of gas in the US has about doubled since the war started...

It wasnt just about oil , although that may have been a factor . Saddam was happy to keep producing and selling oil , and the attack on Iraq will cost more than it would have cost to simply buy the oil .
Even if the attack on Iraq was solely to do with oil, is this such a bad thing . Would people be willing to pay a lot more for their fuel? If so, then why were there recent mass protests when the price of gasoline increased . If Iraq switched off their oil pumps, then the cost of oil would surge , causing a huge rise in everything , and this would bring a World recession .
Would you rather have a World recession or the removal of an evil dictator............ coz thats what it boils down to.
