I got again (after... 20 years??) some love for the old Metallica as i just got "Kill'em All" on CD some months ago, then i made this sort of retrospective and got "Ride The Lightning", "Master of Puppets" and "And Justice..." on my iTunes after years of haven't listen to them. The only one i listened all this time was "St Anger" which i got as a present a couple of years ago and found it kind of awful but still can recognize the band -at least- was trying to make something different.
On the other hand I found the first two albums really outstanding. Just as you i forgot about Metallica with that black album.
As you may see i'm passing through an old metal stage right now, i just got Megadeth's "So Good, So Far, So What" a couple of weeks ago (which i used to love by the time) and i found it has aged pretty well!

I liked them until "The Black Album" or whatever that was. Even "...In
Justice For All" was going downhill. But the same band that had written
"One," a song about the horrors of war, got caught up in US flag-waving
jingoism, then came out with that super-patriotic song "Don't Tread on
Me" after Bush Sr. launched Gulf War 1 -- and suddenly they became this
monster truck, pro wrestling, hell raisin' band beloved by yahoos
everywhere, the same folks that like Toby Kieth's "Big Dog Daddy" stuff.
Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets I do like but I rarely to
listen to it any more -- haven't in ages.
