[kj] Track of the day . . Clutch

>From the earlier stuff, get the Impetus EP and self-titled LP (1995).

Elephant Riders (1998) is interesting, but sounds like nothing
they've done before or since! But I like it all the same. Debut album
Transnational Speedway League (1993) is raw and bloody, and I
don't listen to it much, but you can hear a unique band developing.

My favourites are Slow Hole to China (2003), Blast Tyrant (2004)
and Robot Hive/Exodus (2005, which Burning Beard is from). I'd say
these are the most consistent in terms of quality songwriting and
enough mega-riffs to blow your socks off.

They recently released a compilation of very early stuff, also
with a few modern tracks, called Pitchfork and Lost Needles, which
is also interesting, but that early stuff could be a completely different
band from how they sound now. My least favourite is probably
Pure Rock Fury (2001) which curiously was the album that
saw them get most coverage/press. But it still has some great
songs on it.

Hell, buy them all. And if you get a chance to see them live, do it.
Happy hunting!

To stop you worrying, Clutch are probably the most intelligent

and literate rock band around. I love 'em. If anything, they have

replaced KJ in my affections these last few years. A band that are

constantly touring/recording, they are the only group I can think of

right now that I will move heaven and earth to go and see. Singer

Neil Fallon is a hypnotic frontman (his video performance in front

of the lectern remind you of anyone?!) guitarist Tim Sult is

hugely original and the rhythm section never fail to stun.

They've evolved from a hardcore band (first few EPs and albums)

into a strange concoction of twisted southern rock - most recent

LP From Beale St to Oblivion slacks off a bit but still has some

monstrous grooves on it.

On the other hand what i don't like is that super-red-neck-white-trash look. Makes me think inmediately in some KKK racist bastards, or in those "Minute Men" idiots from Arizona that enjoy shooting at the mexican illegals that cross the border... but this is 100% prejudice. Anyone know if i am right or wrong? Anyone know if a black or a latin guy would be welcome to a Clutch gig?
