There’s a theory that the thing that originally set the crust to floating all over the place and forming supercontinents from time to time (geologists think it’s happened several times, Gondwana was just the last one…) was a massive Asteroid impact. Cracked the shell and it’s been wafting around ever since.

 

There’s impact craters up to 170km wide from asteroid collisions. The one in South America is now believed to be the one that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. When I was a kid that was just a theory, taken as fact now I believe.
