Well post punk is completely tied up to begin with, wherever Killing Joke were from was gonna be the default de facto winner! They are head and shoulders above *most* of the rest of that genre in so many ways… plenty of good competition, but shit…no one really with that whole package, that plethora of unique attributes.

I can’t comment too much about punk, but with my limited knowledge I’d have to agree, the Ramones stuff sounds pretty boring to me to be honest, like the same song over and over. Just my relatively unqualified opinion at this stage. Whereas the Sex Pistols, it’s absolutely dripping in invective, wit, sarcasm, outright attack on the establishment, society, the audience…I don’t mind the New York Dolls and Iggy, but a lot of that NYC scene just came across as dirty and decadent. The UK WAS dirty and decadent, but the Sex Pistols weren’t a celebration of that, a la Lou Reid, they were a reaction against it.

As are Killing Joke.

So yeah, have to agree on the punk front, metal is another matter…

Incredibly well summarised, wulfdot - I agree!

just stirring the pot this argument has been done to deathbut in defense of link wray: he didn't have a mohawk or studs, instead he had one lung (hence the lack of lyrics), a leather jacket minus the studs and one seriously nasty guitar technique! but his instrumentals cast far more punk attitude and atmosphere than an albums worth of 70's punk.and no punk player worth a rats left nad would tell you he isn't punk...anyone offering an opinion about punk whether - who, what, where, when, how so - and hasn't ever picked up an instrument, jumped on stage, taken a steamy gob or two hocked at 'em from the mindless masses, and proceeded to win'em over - has no value to their opinion.they have a right to their opinion ( to flush it that is ) but no valuethat said:in generalthe best 70's punk came from the UKthe best 80's ( hardcore) punk came from the USAthe best post punk from the UKtwbongo wrote: did he have a big red mohawk and a studded leather jacket, and patchesall over his trousers?? =) On Jan 25, 2008 8:28 AM, fluw <fluwdot at earthlink.net> wrote:

That article was spot on Greg! Summed it up completely, though I must admit to you that I really liked 10! The thing with Stanglers post Cornwell was that John Ellis just did not workas a guitarist and it was rather evident that JJ was going with the flow fora lot of it. Ellis' guitar was very bluse based and rather staid. ________________________________ Connect and share in new ways with Windows Live.
