That's really not fair on your part to say Obama has "cozied up" with these people. 
Yeah, the left has a lot of jerks and creeps who, in the long term, have done far more damage to their movements.
I think why people are responding to you so strongly is not you, per se, but that in the U.S., the GOP constantly harps on moral values, obeying the law and claims to hold the high moral ground on all fronts. And as we have seen, that is not the case. 
The hypocrisy is the issue (although I don't think your original argument is hypocritical at all).
