   Maybe it was all a joke and the guy poking his brains out lost a bet. There is a big 
letter J in the top left corner of the carving.
 
   May I suggest the Buddhist apocalypse, where after all necessary reincarnations one simply 
ceases being and achieves oneness with the Great Oneness. Or something like that.  

You have 4 years before the Mayan ending kicks in.
