As a curious side note, that Wikipedia page links to a page about Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome, a condition that affects males from Thailand/Laos/Cambodia/Vietnam/Singapore etc. The main symptom is dying in one's sleep.
There were a number of cases in the USA in the early 80s, including several young man who believed that something in their nightmares was trying to kill them. Eventually one young man became so convinced that he lived on coffee in a desperate attempt to avoid sleep. His parents, distressed at their son's breakdown, consulted a doctor and acquired sleeping tablets; the boy took them, then spat them out. Realising he wasn't taking the medication, his parents 'spiked' him, crushing the tablets into his food. Sure enough, he fell asleep, but he didn't wake up. They found a pot of coffee hidden in his closet.
This case inspired Wes Craven to write A Nightmare On Elm Street. To my mind, giving something a medical-sounding name and producing statistics doesn't quite dispel the more-than-spooky aspects of the case, and doesn't hide the fact that the experts have no idea what is happening to these young me. Creeps me out.
Jim.
