The Thing remake is an all-time fave - one of Carpenters best, up there with Halloween.

Not so. John Carpenter's The Thing, David Cronenberg's The Fly, The Blob (1988), Tobe Hooper's The Toolbox Murders, off the top of my head...
 
For what it's worth, the Japanese Ring is technically a remake.
