Well, I gather many people had a rough time growing up in the DDR. It's also worth remembering that being a punk/metal fan or a Christian were both excellent ways of rebelling against the state back then and perhaps a little less dodgy than being a fascist...
 
When I was in Jena last year my brother took me into a pub where Christians and metallers used to hang out in the 1980s, both groups being generally unwelcome elsewhere and under threat of being regularly busted. It's a little odd to find a place where metallers and Christians hung out together (doesn't happen much over here, not since the days of Stryper ;- ) but apparently it was a mutual support thing. Very interesting.
