[kj] [OT] Magazine

You fight picker! Hey, Alex, honestly, I would have to see it again and do some homework on it. I just remember both myself and the person I was with turned it off. Also, I think the fact that it was Roman Polanski, and he is such a great director was the biggest factor. It just didn't seem to be his style. But now you make me wanna give it a try again. I have sat through "Ishtar" without turning it off...maybe I can get through it this time.

Are you serious? I loved "Frantic" -- was was your problem with it? Not picking a fight, I'm just curious.

I actually did not finish watching "Frantic", I just was annoyed. His future wife (Polanski's), really beautiful French woman, was in it, but I just couldn't stand it.

I would think with that Oscar for Best Director (with accompanied standing ovation for "The Pianist"...I think he got it that year?????) he's back in business very nicely. However, I feel he should be in a bizarre reality show: a real life version of "No Exit" with Denis Leary. Whose with this amazing populist idea? ;)

Also, I think "Frantic" (from '88) is underrated. Really like that movie.
As for Polanski's scandalous past, that might be resolved in the near future. (Given how Woody Allen still continues to work in spite of his really wretched personal decision to have an affair with his step-daughter, nothing is impossible).

Apart from “Pirates”, “What?” and that awful “Oliver Twist” he did recently.

My favourite Polanski is “The Tenant”, and I’m also a huge fan of “Repulsion”, “Chinatown”, “Tess”, “Knife In The Water”, “Frantic”, “Bitter Moon”, “Rosemary’s Baby” (in fact, when I was last in NY, I skulked around the Dakota building like a weirdo, amidst all the glum Lennon devotees, who were disappointed that I was looking for “Rosemary’s Baby” camera angles rather than forlornly looking for bloodstains on the – erm – sidewalk). I also like “The Pianist”, and the daft Devil book one with that Depp fellow. Oh, and “The Fearless Vampire Killers”. And even “Cul de Sac”. Donald Pleasence in drag? Count me in. His “Macbeth” is great too, as is ”Death & The Maiden”.

He’s a great film-maker, whose unfortunate tendency to molest under-age girls in Jack Nicholson’s Jacuzzi rather spoils things.
