What exactly IS a soulful job?
That's up to the individual to decide, but generally a job that you didn't
feel pressured to get into because it's your best way of putting food on
the table etc, because the basics are so expensive compared to the average
or minimum wage. Healthcare, science, education, entertainment, journalism
/ writing, sports / fitness, agriculture, horticulture, construction, etc
etc. In the future, automation will be able to take care of so much that
we'll be able to get away with far less than the current 37.5 hour week,
and do what we want. In fact I see reducing the 37.5 hour week to 30-35
immediately as one way to ease the current job problems. Productivity
constantly goes up, automation constantly increases, but we work the same
hours. Hrm. Something's fucked here.
Re obesity being a problem - the human body is programmed to store every
spare calorie, because in the past that was a survival necessity. You can
easily get an extra 1000 cals a day for a pittance (peanut butter, oil,
soft-drink etc, if you want me to find the cheapest 1000 cals I can find
I'm happy to look into it, guarantee I can do it under $US2 / day). Nine
days of that and you have an extra kilo. 90 days = 10kg (22 pounds). 88
lbs per year. WAY too easy. Also bear in mind our sense of satiety is
programmed to kick in when we are in surplus, again for survival reasons.
Also, I'm not one to bag overweight people, I know they are a popular
group at the moment to attack, but they're still people, and I don't think
you're an inherently better person than anyone else because of your
waistline. It's pretty common for people to eat through stress and
boredom, both of which are symptoms of working at a job you hate. I've
done it / do it. Not getting enough sleep is another cause of hormonal
imbalances that lead to over-eating. Lack of sleep is common in people who
work and stress too much. Visceral fat is linked to stress. etc etc.
