[kj] (OT) Sad Songs

My earliest memories of The Cure:
Wathcing Lullaby on television (was no 1 or 2 for several weeks) - I thought
Bob Smith was gay and the song was about his fight against rising feelings
of gayness (gaydom?), personified by a spider / spider web.

I loved pretty much everything they did up to and including
Disintegration
even The Lovecats :o).
I first heard the Cure in earnest in 1984
They were the first band that made me realise that there was more to
music
than heavy metal..which was mostly crap by 1984 anyway.
Shit - I'd have absolutely LOVED to have seen them on the
Pornography tour.
I remember seeing them at Glastonbury in 1986 in the middle of a
spectacular
Thunder & lightning storm, having narrowly avoided getting arrested at
Stonehenge the day before. One of the best gigs I've ever seen (the
Cure, that is)
For some reason Primary almost reminds me of something Hawkwind might
have done in about 1978 (a good thing in my book) - I can imagine Robert
Calvert singing it.

Primary is a brilliant, brilliant track. And A Forest.
Every time they've tried to be upbeat and happy it's kinda sucked, well
at least not lived up to their other stuff, in my opinion. If that was
all they did I'd never have picked up a single Cure album. Catchy songs,
but nothing too special.
Lovecats is fucking stupid, sounds like something a sad drama teacher
cooked up for a class to perform.
Having said that, Primary has an upbeat feel and energy to it.

I'm more of the older stuff, like Seventeen Seconds, Pornography, and
the Top. Disintergration was pretty good too. But Seventeen Seconds is
memorable for me, as far as the Cure goes.

Well, I'm biased of course, I really like 4:13 Dream.
But Bloodflowers was bloody fabulous, IMO.

They're not going to make a good one again, are they ?
I lost interest after Disintegration - really didn't like the 'We've
always had a dance element to our music' remix album.
Occasionally I've tried to get back into them, I bought Bloodflowers
Which I thought was rather dull. I tried that one that was produced
By the bloke who produced Slipknot - that one was REALLY shite !!
I also bought 4.13 Dream a few weeks ago - kind of a last attempt,
but having listened to it a few times I have to say it sounds pretty
tepid
too, sadly :o( .
