I'm sure everyone in the free world has seen this already...but this is Mike
Patton's spontaneous response to hearing Wolfmother (Wolf Bitch?) at some
festival...

6 years ago - SIX YEARS AGO - I heard it accurately said that we are
currently in "the throwback era of music."
And that seems true to this day. Bands are judged in terms of who they
are "throwback" to. Who cold you say the Beatles or the ex Pistols were
a "throwback to? Who were Siouxsie and the Banshees a "throwback" to" ou
can be a music nerd and cite very specific rare bands, etc. And ou could
argue tenuously Chuck Berry, yadda, yada re: the Pistols. But come one..
But I think you all know what I mean. May punk bands like Career Suicide
and Government Warning go to the lengths to reproduce the studio sound
quality of the early 80s bands, so if you were to hear them you might
think, Oh wow, this si some early 80s hardcore band I'd never heard before.
Everyone wants something that harkens back to Joy Division (Interpol,
She Wants Revenge), or classic early 80s hardcore (Career Suicide), or
post-punk (Arctic Flowers, The Estranged), etc. No band is
influence-free, and some bands are able to take the most of a melange of
their inspirations and sculpt it into something new, but it does still
feel like the music world in general is very much in "throwback" mode.
Even mainstreamier bands like Wolfmother are praised about ho they
"harken back" to Led Zeppelin.
