The Lieberman-McCain bill may be (at the least) an attempt to beef up their hawkish posture and froth up the tea-hadis so they and teh people who love them will go out and vote. Not to mention a way for hard-right to get their name on the record as supporting such ideas and bills.. this is an election year, after all. Let's see if this latest shot of Lieber-Cain grows any legs.
About We Are Change and Oath Keepers, you may wanna email the SPLC and ask them about the evidence for them being labeled hate groups. I'm sure they'll respond to you. I'm curious what they'd say.

[looking at the current state of things..]
'Who has the fun..
..is it always a man with a gun...?
Someone must have told him if you work too hard... you can sweat"

true. also noticed nation of islam on their official list.
but, we are change espouses no violence whatsoever. they named themselves after a ghandi quote, fer christ. they're mostly concerned with getting a new investigation for 911 and routing out local corruption.
splc also seems very concerned with a group called oath keepers, which, as far as i can tell, is a small group of soldiers that sign a piece of paper that says they won't obey illegal orders.
these two groups, if anything, are a threat to the establishment. and if the splc is spending time singling them out when they have a choice selection of tattooed nazi skinheads to expose, it leads me to believe they are establishment, or at least quite fond of it.
possible dovetail: i came across this insane piece of legislation offered by senators mccain and lieberman to deal with "enemy belligerents". condensed version: if the government believes you might pose a threat they can arrest and detain and torture you without miranda or trial, indefinitely: http://www.aclu.org/national-security/senators-mccain-and-lieberman-introduce-bill-authorize-indefinite-detention

>> pretty manipulative the way they lump together pro-peace groups like 'we are change' with
>> the most loathsome, toothless white power groups.
>I think the SPLC's definition of hate has to do more with the subject espousing the hate, and less with the object of said >hate (tho' i'd have to check their criteria again). For example, there's a - get this - jewish group** (can't be hateful, >right?) who's called a hate group because here in the U.S. they try murdering and plant bombs against who they think are >enemies of the jewish people.
>I've also known a few Hispanic nationalist types who have a fanatical "love" for their ethnicity but when they also >actively wish harm on white people, that's when they're espousing hate as far as I'm concerned, no matter >their "underdog" status of a minority-group advocate.
>**JDL / Jewish Defense League
