I too thought instantly of Shellac with that track. Love it.

Thanks for posting again Phil! This album is really fantastic.
Very diverse/eclectic in their approach to the music (is not like 2003 which
sound is pretty solid and homogenic), but this only make it richer in sound
and textures. There are no "fillers" at my first listen.
The tracks i loved the most are (i don´t get the lyrics, so i´ll refer only
to music):
>Depthcharge: What a damn good powerful evil song!!!!
>European Super State: This is a new classic for me, i think i´ll like this
forever.
>The Great Cull: More magnificent power! Do this guys really are on they
50's!?!?! (Kids time to take some lessons here!)
>Here Comes The Singularity: Exciting for bringing back that oldschool KJ
vibe. For me is a mix of the "new Joke" with tha "Firedances" felling and
"Night Time" style guitar. I wish they do this more often.
>The Raven King: Beyond all the homage thing (i can´t understand the
lyrics). They are exploring new textures, it´s got some "new wavish" style
and the chorus is magnificent. Nostalgic and powerful. Excellent homage to
our dear Paul V. Raven.
>This World Hell: When it began i thought: damn! This is so weird to be the
Joke! I felt some dirty Shellac/Big Black atmosphere there. And then Jaz´s
growls approaching from behind like an avalanche!!! A very metal bridge, but
like they haven´t done before... Hey! there´s even double bass drumming
there!!! Speechless. Again new textures and atmospheres. The end section,
after 4:30, is superb!! What a damn good powerful evil song!!!!(yes, again!)
More highlights:
>Big Paul: He stands solid as THE DRUMMER of Killing Joke (like if we didn´t
know it before ;). The man is in great shape exploring different styles. He
amazed me when i saw the guys live in NY (2008) he´s a perfect
human-drum-machine (in the best way), super precise, powerful and original.
He amazed me again in this album. Hats off Mr. Ferguson!!!!!!
>Jaz´s voice: He sings (again) when he needs to sing and growls when he has
to do so. In great shape too.
Endgame and InExcelsis were not very exciting -alone- for me, but like many
others, i think both fit perfect in the album, "Endgame" turns out to be now
a very nice track after the mighty "Depthcharge".
Now, where does it stands? After listening just a couple of times i put it
right next to 2003, but i fear that after listening it more and more it will
leave "2003" behind to stand then next to "Democracy" (which i rate pretty
high, over Pandemonium). I think i prefer the not-so-dark version of Killing
Joke, and this album, even when is very powerful, has in general a joyful
feeling.
