[kj] OT: Recording software

I've gone Mac, and use Cubase, Logic, Reaper, Audition and Reason / Record, depending on what I'm doing. I've played with Ableton Live and Pro Tools 9, but don't like them enough to investigate further. The only reason to go with Pro Tools these days, in my view, is if you need to exchange projects with someone who uses PT, or would find the familiarity useful with a view to working in a studio; having said that, an increasing number of studios appear to be using Logic.

The advantage of Logic is the additional stuff that comes with it; if you already have the plug-ins you want, even Logic's overkill, and you could get by perfectly adequately with something like Reaper (which I've really taken to, and is multi-platform).

NI Komplete forms the basis of my instruments, with a guitar, bass, couple of keyboards and some interfaces. Although I've got hardware effects, I rarely use them these days because Guitar Rig, Amplitube & Vandal are so good, and allow me to totally fuck with the effects I had live while recording.

I can emulate pretty much any vintage synth I want to with VSTi's, and have got rid of almost all of my hardware synths.

Ridiculously, I can now produce a better quality demo on my iPhone / iPad with an iRig interface than I could on a PC four years ago. The Macs mean I have said goodbye to latency issues, and the only disadvantage with so much software to play with is that the enormous choices sometimes mean that I spend less time creating than I do tinkering. Seriously, an iMac with 16GB of RAM is sufficient to do anything I could want.

Also, I have a fucking Fairlight on my phone, which is still extraordinary to me.
