[kj] OT: Recording software (Darren A. Peace)

I've been using PCs throughout my experience with audio / video / multimedia 
production. I never had any latency issues, with the exception of using 
Sonar. Well... albeit, the PCs 10-11 years ago may had latency issues, but I 
haven't had major issues with latency thus far, for about 8-9 years.

I did start out with apple computers in the beginning. My first apple was a 
IIC. I then moved to using classic macs, when I was using photoshop for 
imaging / print / film production in 1992. But... I actually converted to 
PCs fulltime in 1997, because that's what I was using mostly in the 
industry, especially when it came to print / film, video / audio, and 3D / 
2D animation. Granted, MACS do out perform PCs, but I don't have to break 
the bank buying or building a PC.

Plus, I can upgrade manually using 3rd party hardware without having to be 
limited to Apple proprietary hardware and spending an arm and leg for it. 
For me PCs are economical. And of course there are more VSTs available for 
PCs.





I've gone Mac, and use Cubase, Logic, Reaper, Audition and Reason / Record, 
depending on what I'm doing. I've played with Ableton Live and Pro Tools 9, 
but don't like them enough to investigate further. The only reason to go 
with Pro Tools these days, in my view, is if you need to exchange projects 
with someone who uses PT, or would find the familiarity useful with a view 
to working in a studio; having said that, an increasing number of studios 
appear to be using Logic.

The advantage of Logic is the additional stuff that comes with it; if you 
already have the plug-ins you want, even Logic's overkill, and you could get 
by perfectly adequately with something like Reaper (which I've really taken 
to, and is multi-platform).





NI Komplete forms the basis of my instruments, with a guitar, bass, couple 
of keyboards and some interfaces. Although I've got hardware effects, I 
rarely use them these days because Guitar Rig, Amplitube & Vandal are so 
good, and allow me to totally fuck with the effects I had live while 
recording.

I can emulate pretty much any vintage synth I want to with VSTi's, and have 
got rid of almost all of my hardware synths.

Ridiculously, I can now produce a better quality demo on my iPhone / iPad 
with an iRig interface than I could on a PC four years ago. The Macs mean I 
have said goodbye to latency issues, and the only disadvantage with so much 
software to play with is that the enormous choices sometimes mean that I 
spend less time creating than I do tinkering. Seriously, an iMac with 16GB 
of RAM is sufficient to do anything I could want.

Also, I have a fucking Fairlight on my phone, which is still extraordinary 
to me.

Honestly? Not impressive at first, but I've found it a definite grower. 
Youth's vocals are a world away from his recent KJ backing barks (in that he 
doesn't sound like a drunk at a bus station shouting at passers-by), and the 
songs, while uncomplicated in structure and often synth-heavy, are druggy 
and fun.

I'm still listening to it several days after the box arrived, and just as 
I'll never read all the books I want to before I die, I'm aware that I'll 
never hear all the music I want to, but am still being entertained by this 
album.

I do mostly guitar based stuff & use Logic & love it.
To get sounds in, I use a line6 TonePort UX2 which is fantastic, almost 
pocket money priced with a huge, natural sounding range of amps, bass amps, 
vocal preamps, acoustic preamps, effects blah blah although to be honest 
have just started using Logics amps of late because it's AC30 is so good.
Will occasionally mic up my amp & use my pedals but it's a faff as my needs 
are pretty basic.
Am also very impressed with logics synths although I only use them sparingly 
to add a bit of texture here & there.
I also use EZ drummer which is excellent & perfect for throwing down an 
idea/vibe or even a finished drum track if you can't be bothered programming 
yourself!

I used to use Cubase rewired into Reason, both of which I can highly 
recommend.
Tried Ableton (I got a lite version with the UX2) but couldn't get on with 
it but that was purely it being such a different interface & laziness!

There are so many decent options I guess it's ultimately down to budget (or 
bandwidth..) & what you want to produce at the end of it.
After all, you can knock a nail in with the arse end of a screwdriver, but 
it's better to use a hammer :)
It's hard to go wrong with anything anyone has suggested as they all seem to 
have a plethora of hammers & screwdrivers included.
Having said that, sometimes you only need a hammer
must. stop. typing.
