"I never knew where to really start..."
Start with:
'Firehose of Petrucci Spunk in Your Face'
next
'Live in the Metronome'
then
'Dream Theater: Live at Operating Thetan 2003 Scientology Conference'
Make sure to pay special attention to the track:
'Hack contract singer slows it all down to let Petrucci's fingers stop glowing so he can yodel all about how some bird left him 23 years ago last Tuesday because of his mullet and gluten intolerance and it's still bumming him out in B minor / Love Lies Bleeding medley'
=)

what do we think of Dream Theater?
I was at a show a block away the night they were in DC (last weekend), heard they were playing and I was able to get passes-- I liked it- they translate over well live.
I'd prob go see them again
I always thought they were ok, but never game them too much of a listen- all the long songs and so many of them, I never knew where to really start...

>> To say there' s no "metal" in Killing Joke is, sorry, an oversight. For a start, the band would entirely cop to being influenced by it. Droves of metal bands have cited them as an influence. Seriously -- you can't hear the metal heaviosity in, "Pandemonium" or "The Wait"?

They defy categorization, and proudly so.
