I joined the Gathering and a KJ message board or whatever at about the same time, sometime in the late 90's (97? 98?). Pretty much the same people were on both, and the latter eventually died.
Not much was happening in KJ land, although the Gathering was a pretty vibrant place - Paul Rangecroft's site, Mik's videos, Raven himself as a regular here, etc etc.
There were also quite a lot of Gatherings in London. I can't remember where the first one I went to was, but anyway... I arrived, looked around, saw a girl in a Mish t-shirt or similar, and went up and said "Hello, is this the Gathering?" Er, no, it wasn't. So I hung around for a bit longer, and eventually went to the loo. Coming back, there was a short corridor back to the bar. As I went into it from one end, the door at the other end opened, and a large figure appeared. He pretty much blocked out the light. Not having learned my lesson, I said "Are you Jel?"
Luckily, this time I was right ;-)

Quick poll: What was happening in KJ land when you joined the Gathering?
Me: If memory serves, the fabled UNSPEAKABLE compilation was gestating and NO WAY OUT BUT FORWARD GO (remember that?) was about to be released, to much fanfare (despite the fact that it featured a CD ROM [remember those?} and showcased a frankly mediocre performance). Smashing artwork from Mike Coles, though.

Good god, is it really a decade since Killing Joke ended that interminably long and tedious near-retirement in the latter part of the 20th century, until out of nowhere they finally breathed life into the Gathering again and the universe with the release of Loose Cannon followed by KJ 2003?
Ten whole years, cor blimey, where did that go! It feels to me as though they are still only at the beginning of their resuscitation, but in fact we've had 4 albums, several tours, a big re-union, almost a spoken-word album (it's the thought that counts), at least one lecture - AND it appears there's still a bit more fruit to shake off the tree this year with more music, a book and allegedly a film.
By Killing Joke's standards the past decade has been a maelstrom of activity.
Of course, Raven's death must also factor into this period, unfortunately.
But it's still amazing to see the original band back together.
Long may the magick continue!
