Righto, thanks for the suggestions. I've finally had time to listen to all this - really rather good. (And slightly odd that they passed me by so thoroughly way back when.) Guess I'll get some...

Cheers,

Jamie

Very well put. Except whenever I try to describe them they always sound like a (very good) pub rock band,
and they were so much more than that. One of the best rhythm sections I've ever seen/heard. And singer Bill Carter

was both a superb guitarist and a great lyricist. He also had a thoroughly menacing stage presence, that

1000 yard stare thing going on. I still listen to their songs all the time but most of my love for them was
down to the live show - I rank them up there with Killing Joke and a few others as my all time favourite live band.

Just a classic power trio. But yes, go for Gun Shy and Good and Gone.

You get a vague idea here, them doing Sweet Water Pools live:

and two of my favourite tracks, Twin Cadillac Valentine

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeGtlaizSzg

and Wild Blue Yonder

Unfortunately they blew it, or lost it, or something... signed to Warners, Bill (allegedly) had his head in a bag of coke,

plus they suffered the horror of the novelty hit - the song I Wanna Be A Flintstone, which is

otherwise a great song, got attached to that god awful Flintstones movie.

Funnily enough, just heard from a friend a few weeks ago that Bill Carter has come in from the
wilderness and is writing songs again...

Was a big fan of Screaming Blue Messiahs back in the day. First album, ,"Gun Shy," is the one to have, although the prior EP "Good and Gone" also has merit. A very aggressive, muscular band; like a child of Dr. Feelgood and older brother to the Godfathers.

Oh man don't get me started!
At work right now but will wax lyrical about them later...

Screaming Blue Messiahs - don't think I ever heard them.

What should I listen to?

Just remembered/re-discovered why the Lowery name was so familiar:

"Going out on his own under the King Blank moniker, Lowery continued his wicked ways on the three-track Mouth Off, featuring the input of Screaming Blue Messiahs honcho Bill Carter, who produced and played on one song and co-wrote two. With the Messiahs backing him on the title track, Lowery seems newly dangerous..."

I had this EP only because the Messiahs were (and still are) one of my favourite bands, but I remember it being good.

Sigh, time to get busy on ebay I guess.

I have a Ski Patrol 7" in a box somewhere, Cut I think. I remember the Ian Lowery group being OK,
sure I saw them live back in the day - no, I never realised it was the same guy. He died in 2001 apparently.

Wow!

That's excellent news. I only properly got into the Joke in '83, and back in those pre-internet days it was a real journey of discovery. For example, it took a while to discover that they'd released something before Wardance / Pssyche. After that I found out about Red Beat and Ski Patrol, but it wasn't till 1988 that I managed to get a copy of a tape of Red Beat (and some while later that I found some vinyl at a record fair or 2nd hand shop)... but I never found any Ski Patrol.

Agent Orange sounds pretty cool (on the link below) and I didn't know that Jaz played synth for them.

Thanks for posting...
