I just checked, and although there doesn't seem to be any option in 
the menus for turning the subtitles on or off, the remote control for 
my DVD player has a subtitle button, and that *does* turn off (or 
back on) the subtitles -- so yes, they *can* be turned off (if, of 
course, your remote control has that subtitles button!).

However, as Thomas mentioned, in the accompanying (2nd) disc with 
"The Wonderful, Horrible..." on it, for that film they *can't* be 
turned off (in any way) -- although I presume you're more interested 
in Der heilige Berg, of course.
