You may want to follow the stats on nursing home stays--men average 1 =
1/2 yrs, women 3 1/2 to 4 yrs-thus the three yr average was born. =
However, men get more home care longer and get to SNF's sicker and die =
quicker. Women do not like burdening the kids, Dad is gone, so she goes =
to the SNF and adapts and lives longer. 1 in 2 women over 65 spend time =
in a SNF, 1 in 4 of them more than 5 yrs. Men 1 in 3 with 1 in 13 =
longer than 5 yrs. Look at the home care, too-63% higher risk of =
caregiver mortality being a caregiving spouse. Usually longer than the =
nursing home stay, impacting the whole family, too.

You missed the point on the three years. Everyone worth their salt =
designs a plan to meet their clients specific needs and budget, whether =
its three years or for lifetime. My point is that everyone should have =
at least a minimum of three years of LTC as long as it would not alter =
their life style or have to give something up to pay for premiums. In 7 =
years as a LTC specialist I have never written a policy for less than a =
combination of three years of care. 50% of the plans written or for =
lifetime. Lesser benefit periods than lifetime are dictated by need and =
budget.=20
Without going into a whole lot of BS on why, basically three years =
would cover the average requirement of LTC, based upon the best of our =
knowledge today.
