Subject: [Nahumembers] NAHU News UPDATE: Do Not Call Registry Moving =
Back on Line
NEWS from NAHU
News Item: The House of Representatives voted 412-to-8 to grant the FTC =
the authority to enforce the Do Not Call registry, in response to a =
judicial ruling that the FTC did not have this authority. The Senate is =
expected to follow suit and the President expected to sign the bill.
Why Does This Matter: The Telemarketing and Consumre Fraud and Abuse =
Prevention Act, which created the Do Not Call registry, specifically =
exempted the financial and insurance industries, making it a non-issue =
for NAHU members. However, Congress' efforts to legislate the registry =
into existence introduced the possibility that these exemptions could be =
lost. Because H.R. 3161 merely makes explicit the FTC's authority, the =
exemptions remain in place.
