After some IRC advice from # git I tried the following:

git repack -a -d -f
git gc --prune=now --aggressive

$ git count-objects -vH
count: 0
size: 0 bytes
in-pack: 51561
packs: 1
size-pack: 12.43 MiB
prune-packable: 0
garbage: 0
size-garbage: 0 bytes

O.k. third time is the charm..
I'll remove the repo and push a new one which the compression.
