January newsletter=85

GREETINGS FOR JANUARY, AND HAPPY NEW YEAR! There=92s something =
reassuring about making it past the shortest day of the year. The nights =
aren=92t so long any more, and every day brings more light. I also like =
what I heard once about the practical value of the new year =96 as we =
live our lives through the year, things accumulate (joys, pains, details =
of all kinds) and life gets so clogged up, we=92d never make it unless =
we had these built-in times to start over. So here=92s to starting over =
and to a productive, peaceful, satisfying year without so much clogging =
up=85

TO CHEW ON=85 I=92ve just finished reading a Christmas gift, The Secret =
Life of Bees. Fantastic! A wonderful story (a novel with bees an =
important part of the backdrop) full of writing and observations I took =
walks to think about. Much to chew on, sometimes in one sentence =96 =
like when the narrator, in thinking how grateful she is for the =
absurdities of her own life including living in a pink house, says, "I =
wake to up to wonder every day." It=92s a good new year=92s reminder =96 =
the wonder of the muffled sounds snow brought this very morning, the =
wonder of kids=92 quirky comments, the wonder of teachers=92 own =
idiosyncrasies, how almost anything invites wonder if we take time for =
it. But mostly our schedules and agendas crowd wonder out. Making room =
for it =96 unmeasured, unassessed, unhurried =96 might be one of the =
best things we can do this year.

RECENT EVENT=85 Margie Carter and Deb Curtis are names I hope many of =
you recognize for their wonderful work with teachers and for several =
useful books they=92ve written. The three of us have presented several =
workshops together and always value the collaboration. In mid-December =
we got together just to get together =96 3 hours of talk and coffee and =
fruit, no practical work to prepare for anything. And we were all aware =
how important and unusual such times are =96 sharing things we weren=92t =
sure of, no need to be defensive, much wondering out loud, different =
ideas, lots of listening, safe, colleagues and friends digging deep. One =
sign to me about how satisfying the time was: I drove home almost an =
hour with the radio off because nothing could be more interesting than =
continuing in my own head the thoughts we had shared together.

HPYE=85 Thanks to you who have responded to the "deals" we offer with =
this newsletter. It=92s fun to see an order come in with the code word =
written on it=85 This month's newsletter special: the CD "In the Air" is =
$12 and we pay the shipping. (Go to www.tomhunter.com/stufftobuy.htm for =
info.) It=92s a wonderful collection of mostly familiar traditional =
songs recorded with my long-time friends Richard and Helen Scholtz. =
We=92ve gotten heart-felt comments from families telling how their =
children want to hear it all the time =96 at bed-time or in the car =96 =
and I don=92t know any better way to get such lively and accessible =
versions of many songs you already know (and a few you don=92t). The CD =
is subtitled "songs that last," and they have, for a long time. Just add =
"air" as the code word to your order=85 Please keep letting people know =
about this newsletter. Little by little, our numbers grow=85 And check =
the web site too (www.tomhunter.com) for more details about upcoming =
dates and ordering information. We haven=92t added any new essays to the =
web site this month, but we=92ll make up for it in Feb =96 honest! =
=85Again, Happy New Year to you all!
