I'm not sure I get the popular objection to "Fight by day, f*ck by
night." I mean, admittedly, at first listen I cringed too and thought,
"well that's a bit obvious and weak." But on the other hand it's not
like it is in anyway inconsistent with this band's lyrical history or
one of most returned-to common themes. Primitive man, "we go to the
basic feeling...to the basic man..." All this leads quite logically to a
phrase that sums up man as a fighting and copulating little bastard.
From a band whose previous, sparsely worded songs included
constructions like "Follow the feeling wherever it goes, the primitive
way, the primitive day," the "Walking With Gods" opener doesn't make me
cringe anymore. It makes perfect thematic sense.
