Then you need to listen to the chord sequences. I'd say there's a good mix of both of those bands.

To be fair, I'd sooner suggest that Metallica ripped off Motorhead (which they'd be the first to admit) than Iron Maiden.
Uh oh -- my geeky metal roots are showing.

It's a good job Maiden already existed then, for Metallica to TOTALLY rip them off...
Bit like saying those Penny Farthings? Nowhere near as good as my DMR !!!

I got St Anger for free from a radio DJ twat flatmate I had a few years ago, couldn’t give the thing away, it was like a curse. Eventually listened to it again after the first listen just through sheer sense of duty…it’s god awful in my opinion. The title track St Anger sounds like a weak attempt to beLinkin Park. “Flush it out, flush it out” *barf*
Having said that I’d love the chance to see Metallica, passed it up several years ago on the strength (weakness) of the pap they were putting it out, but apparently their live shows still kick ass. Oh well, I’ll catch them when they’re 80 I suppose. Hetfield’s stance on guns and all that is another thing that puts me off these days as well. Metallica were lucky enough to tour with Soundgarden back in the day…
But early Metallica, up to the over-produced but still solid Black album…great stuff. I’d rate 80s Metallica superior to 80s Iron Maiden in general. And great name too.

The setlist is really good! and just as you, i was hoping to get some news in your message about one or two new songs.
I've seen them two times and i can assure you this set-list is way better than the couple i've had the chance to see (once touring after the Black Album -the first time they came to Mexico- and the second one -much better- after they released the 2nd "Garage Days" in '99)
It's a surprise they didn't play but only a very few tracks of their more successful stage (Black album, Load, Reload). And what's even more surprising to me is that they didn't played a single song from "St Anger", it seems they may hate that album right now.
I must recognize i'm looking forward to hear something of their new album. "St. Anger" was not good (still there were a few good tracks), but at least it was a brave experiment and a clear evidence they were trying to make something different, i give credit to the band for stepping away from that "successful" formula of their three previous albums.
I see it this way: their first experiment trying to make something "new" wasn't good, they may have gained some experience with it, after this, their next album should sound a lot better than "St Anger" and still moving forward -musically speaking-. I don't expect something like back in the 80's days (which i used to like a lot), but at least some fresh-heavy proposal.
Changing topic, but staying on this "metalhead" side, i got the The Cavalera Conspiracy (Max and Igor Cavalera + guests) "Inflikted" album and it's pretty good... Pure energy!!

Wow. What a great show.
Just to offer a bit of background, I'm not a huge Metallica fan. I have see
them 3 times before, once at the beginning of the "And Justice For All" tour
in late '89, early in the Black album tour in '91 with Faith No More and
again the same tour with Guns n' Roses. After that, I lost interest even
though I casually kept up on their post Black album releases.
When tickets went on sale for this relatively small benefit show for a local
music conservatory in Silver Lake, I figured it would at least be cool to
see these guys in a small venue.
I got to The Wiltern Theater around 6:30 which is usually plenty of time to
get admittance in the pit as long as I'm within the first 200 - 250 in line
to get in. Tonight was completely insane though. Probably because both the
floor and the balcony was separate GA, it seemed like *everyone* going to
the show was already there and the line went completely around the block. I
have never seen so many people lined up to get in this venue that early
before the doors opened.
Still, they opened the doors around 7:15 and the line moved fast and I was
able to get a great spot just outside the pit about 25 feet back from the
stage. The place filled up really fast and the opening band was "Scars on
Broadway" which was comprised of a few old members of System of a Down.
Pretty decent band, kind of a cross between older Rush and maybe Anthrax or
something. The audience was really well behaved through their set but you
could tell everyone was just waiting to explode Once Metallica took the
stage.
And sure enough, just after 9:30, Metallica opened with "Am I Evil" and the
place went nuts. Even though there were lots of signs posted warning
against moshing and crowd surfing, there were several pockets of it going on
through most of the show although by the last third of the show, it kind of
died down especially after it appeared several people got pretty badly
injured. Also I saw paramedics come in and haul at least two really wasted
guys out from the front late in the show.
The band itself was just incredibly tight from start to finish. Everyone
seemed at the top of their game. Absolutely no weak links in the band at
all. The sounded as muscular and precise as any time in the late 80's, imo.
The sound was really fuckin' loud yet perfect sounding. From a musical
standpoint, I couldn't ask for better. James rarely sang and played center
stage, he usually stayed either on the right or left side mics while
Trujillo and Hammit traded center stage. Hetfield only briefly spoke to the
audience a few times about the reason for the benefit and the band pretty
much just slammed through the set non stop.
A cool part of the encore was when Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea joined
the band for "Fight Fire With Fire."
The only downside was no new stuff from the upcoming album was played.
Other than that, a superb show.
