Gaaah, i wrote that all wrong, a correction is in order. I meant to say I just recently
heard "Hurt" as sung by Johnny Cash for the 1st time ever, otherwise, i'd heard 
the song itself years back when I 1st got "Downward Spiral." MyBad.

 It's got me tinking how many other songs out there are better sung by someone
else other than the original singer/group.

I agree re Hurt, but it's hard to say, you always have 'peak experience'
bias from the first version of a song you like, and if you get the
chronology wrong it can kind of stuff up the proportion of appreciation
the original and coverer gets...I'm rambling.
